Big Tree Fire Company Conducts Live Burn Training

10/18/2003:

Hamburg, NY: On Saturday, October 18, 2003, firefighters from throughout the Town of Hamburg conducted live fire training in a historic house. The 138 year old Saunders Estate, located at 4535 Southwestern Blvd. in Hamburg, was the site of this unique training opportunity.

"Since firefighters typically do not get the opportunity to train under actual fire conditions, this training was extremely valuable" said Big Tree Assistant Chief Christopher Zak. Approximately one-hundred firefighters took part in the day-long training opportunity. While some firefighters got the opportunity to enter rooms that had actual fire in them, others conducted outside activities such as roof ventilation and support operations.

Throughout the day, fires were systematically set throughout the structure allowing firefighters to practice fire suppression techniques. Additionally, firefighters had the opportunity to conduct search and rescue drills in an actual smoke-filled live fire environment.

This live fire training was the culmination of weeks of preparatory training in the structure. According to Big Tree Chief Bob Stoberl, "several of the Town of Hamburg fire companies have been training in this house for weeks in preparation for this live burn."

By providing this unique training to volunteer firefighters, it is hoped that they will be better prepared when confronted with an actual fire.
