Firefighters Train To Extricate Crash Victims

10/09/2004:

Hamburg, NY: With the number of motor vehicle crashes on the rise, firefighters from the Big Tree Volunteer Fire Company took advantage of the nice fall weather to hone their extrication skills. Firefighters attended a morning classroom lecture followed by hands-on extrication evolutions. Vehicle stabilization, door and roof removal, hazard control and patient removal were all practiced by the firefighters in attendance. New stabilization techniques were practiced and firefighters experimented with various methods to pry and cut the vehicles apart.

In the next several weeks, firefighters will test the skills they practiced today by responding to a drill that is now in the planning phase. It is hoped that this training will better prepare firefighters to respond to motor vehicle crashes with entrapment.
