Quick Action Snuffs Out Kitchen Fire

May 31, 2005: Hamburg NY - On Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at 12:40 hours, firefighters from the Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Company were alerted to a possible fire in a residence at 3303 Queens Lane. Initial reports from police on location reported smoke coming from the upper windows. Lake Shore First Assistant Chief Paul Wilson arrived on location and reported smoke from a two story wood-frame structure. A vehicle parked in the driveway, coupled with bystander reports, led crews to believe that an occupant might be asleep in the home.

While crews from Lake Shore advanced initial interior attack lines, additional crews from Big Tree established a water supply and began ventilation. While attack crews extinguished the kitchen fire, members from the Scranton Volunteer Fire Company assisted Lake Shore in conducting an interior search which ultimately came up empty handed. Later it was found that the occupant had left the home prior to the fire. Quick work from the first responding units kept the fire from spreading beyond the kitchen area. However, smoke damage extended throughout the structure.

Lake Shore was assisted on scene by the Big Tree, Scranton, Newton Abbott, and Woodlawn Fire Companies. The Town of Hamburg Police Department is investigating the cause of the fire which has not yet been determined.
