November 2001: This month, the Big Tree Volunteer Fire Company conducted a series of training exercises to test our abilities to effectively combat vehicle fires. With modern advances in vehicle technology, these training evolutions focused on the skills required to safely deal with the new dangers of vehicle fires. Our training exercises involved two live burns. In one evolution, a large motor home was burned. In the second exercise, a full-size station wagon was burned. Firefighters practiced extinguishment techniques while paying attention to potentially dangerous items such as pressurized struts, fuel and propane tanks, and toxic smoke generated from the combustion of plastics. |
