Seat removal and tunneling

Seat removal is essential to tunneling through a school bus. Typically, seats are removed from the rear of the bus working forward towards the front of the bus. Although the hydraulic spreaders or rams can be used to detach the seats from their anchoring points at the floor, this is ill advised. The sudden explosive release of pressure that is generated when the seats separate from the floor causes a loud noise concussion and a violent vibration. Additionally, debris tends to fly violently into the air. A slower but more controlled method is to cut the seat supports utilizing a Sawzall or hydraulic cutter.
Hydraulic spreaders easily detach a set brace from the floor. However, this results in excessive vibration and noise.
This picture captures the flying debris that results when using hydraulic spreaders for seat removal.
Although slower than using hydraulic spreaders, the Sawzall is a great choice for cutting seat posts in a controlled manner. Cuts should be made as low to the floor as possible.
Hydraulic cutters are great for cutting seat posts. However, they tend to leave a larger stub than does the Sawzall.
A halligan bar struck with an axe can be used to pry the remains of the seat bracket from the floor.
An air chisel can also be used to break away the bolts that hold the seat bracket bottom to the floor. Clearing the debris ensures an unobstructed path for extrication.
